Let's Make a Government

The Beacon High School
Constitutional Convention

Why would we ever want to fight the power if WE were the power?

Here’s the deal:
We, as a class (Mrs. Clemens’ Period 8 US History Class) will spend the next month formulating plans for a new and improved government of Beacon High School. Together, we will decide how the government will be organized, run, and function in such a way that will best benefit the student body.

How will we do this?
It will take a lot of brainstorming and planning on our part as well as research into how other governments (namely the United States Government) are organized. We will need to also decide as a class how we will organize ourselves to actually go about this project.

What will be the end result?
The end result will at minimum be a basic outline for a new or improved student government. This government may have plans for multiple branches, new election procedures, or duties beyond that of the current Student Council. If the government that we create is agreed upon to be worthy of implementation, then the idea of presenting this plan to either the current Student Council, BHS faculty and administration, or even the district administration and school board is not outside the realm of possibility! This project’s success depends entirely on what is created by this class!!!

Some questions to think about:
* What are the issues that are important to the students of our school? Are these issues being addressed sufficiently by our current student government? What would need to be changed/added/taken away to make these issues be given the attention that students desire?
* What are some problems that are faced by the student body? Are these problems being addressed sufficiently by our current student government? What would need to be changes/added/taken away to decrease these problems?
* What do students like about our school? What can be done to maintain these characteristics and/or increase the amount of students who are benefiting from them?

To answer these basic questions, we as a class may have to brainstorm and possibly poll the student body to get an accurate understanding of the students’ viewpoints.
